The Snazzy Moon Wishlist: Our Top 5 Materials We Can’t Wait to Engrave Next!
Hey Snazzy Crafters! Tracy and Tammy here from Indianapolis, diving deeper into the amazing world of laser engraving.
We’ve been hard at work perfecting our techniques on the basics—getting those stainless steel tumblers perfectly crisp and those wooden cutting boards beautifully etched. But let’s be honest: we are crafters at heart, and crafters love to experiment!
Our laser engraver is essentially a creative playground, and our brains are buzzing with materials we want to master next. Expanding our material library means expanding the types of unique, permanent gifts we can offer you.
So, pull up a seat! We’re sharing The Snazzy Moon Wishlist—our top 5 materials we are actively researching and testing right now. We need your help deciding which one should jump to the front of the line!
1. Slate and Stone: The Rustic Elegance
There’s something incredibly earthy and classic about slate. If you’ve ever seen a cheese board or a coaster made of dark, natural slate, you know the rich texture it brings to any table setting.
- The Engraving Potential: When the laser hits natural slate, it doesn’t burn the material; it changes the surface tone, revealing a beautiful, subtle light gray or off-white contrast against the dark stone. This effect is naturally permanent and wonderfully rustic.
- Ideal Products: Slate coasters, personalized cheese boards, garden markers, or even small, custom business signs for storefronts.
- Why It’s On Our Wishlist: The rustic elegance of slate perfectly complements the modern contrast of our stainless steel tumblers, creating unique gift bundles. Plus, they look absolutely incredible etched with intricate designs.
- Our Current Challenge: Making sure the final product is consistently clean and the contrast is strong without chipping the fragile edges.
2. Anodized Aluminum: The Pop of Permanent Color
We love vibrant color—that’s why we love sublimation! Anodized aluminum offers a fascinating bridge between the permanence of engraving and the fun of color.
- The Engraving Potential: Anodizing is a process that creates a thick, colored oxide layer on aluminum. When the Fiber Laser hits it, it removes the color layer, instantly revealing the bright, shiny, silver aluminum beneath. The result is a crisp, colorful, and highly durable product that looks incredibly professional.
- Ideal Products: Colored metal business cards, personalized metal rulers, dog tags, or small, brightly colored jewelry pieces.
- Why It’s On Our Wishlist: We could offer personalized merchandise in a wide array of vibrant colors that still have the permanence of metal—no fading or peeling, ever!
- Our Current Challenge: Perfecting the laser speed and power to achieve the cleanest possible mark without creating a rough texture on the exposed aluminum.
3. Cork and Rubber: The Eco-Friendly, Light-Touch Option
As we look for more eco-friendly and tactile products, cork and certain types of rubber are high on the list.
- The Engraving Potential: Cork is a dream to engrave! The laser creates a soft, dark contrast that looks naturally burned but remains lightweight. Rubber, especially synthetic rubber sheets, can be engraved to create custom stamps or durable, anti-slip pads.
- Ideal Products: Custom cork bottle stoppers, cork leather wallets, branded stamps for crafters and small businesses, or decorative cork coasters.
- Why It’s On Our Wishlist: These materials are often lightweight and less expensive, allowing us to offer fantastic personalized bulk favors for weddings and large events.
- Our Current Challenge: Managing the smell! Burning cork and rubber can create strong fumes, so we need to ensure our ventilation system is 100% prepared for the job (safety first!).
4. Powder-Coated Glassware (Beyond Etching!)
We can already etch bare glass, but now we’re researching specialty glassware that is pre-coated with a thin powder finish (similar to what we see on tumblers, but specifically designed for glass).
- The Engraving Potential: The laser removes the thin coating, exposing the clear glass underneath. This creates a highly dramatic, clean contrast—like a custom black glass mug with the design etched clearly in the glass.
- Ideal Products: Custom beer mugs with team logos, sleek cocktail glasses, and unique wine glasses with personalized bases.
- Why It’s On Our Wishlist: It offers a dramatic visual punch that traditional glass etching cannot achieve, giving us a higher-end barware product line.
- Our Current Challenge: Finding high-quality, reliable glassware that is perfectly coated and can withstand the laser without cracking or shattering.
5. Colored Acrylics (Reverse Engraving)
We already etch clear acrylic signs, but colored acrylic opens up new doors for stunning, multi-dimensional products.
- The Engraving Potential: For a truly unique look, we can reverse engrave colored acrylic sheets. This involves engraving the back side of the sheet, which protects the design while giving the finished product a clean, glossy front surface.
- Ideal Products: Custom keychains (cut and engraved), detailed awards with stand-offs, name tags, or durable luggage tags.
- Why It’s On Our Wishlist: This technique is a powerhouse for creating custom-shaped products—think engraved, brightly colored, creepy-cool ghost keychains that can be cut to any size!
- Our Current Challenge: Setting the laser perfectly to etch deep enough for visibility but not so deep that it compromises the stability of the cut.
